May 7, 2025

Congratulations to Nga Mavis Phan and Maninder Kailay from the Chemical and Environmental Technology program for receiving national recognition through the Wawanesa Climate Champions Youth Innovation Grant. These two exceptional second-year students were awarded this grant for their research project, Supercritical CO Techniques for Lithium-Ion Battery Metal Recovery. Under the supervision of instructor Ali Al Jibouri, this team demonstrated the program's commitment to applied learning and contributed to advancing climate solutions.

This $30,000 Youth Innovation Grant supports a student-led climate action initiative to launch or enhance a climate adaptation or climate mitigation project. This prestigious award highlights the talent, dedication, and innovation of our students and reflects the high standards of excellence we cultivate at BCIT. This research team will soon begin developing groundbreaking technology focused on the recovery of precious metals from recycled lithium batteries.

We are incredibly proud of our students, the School of Energy, and BCIT as a whole. This recognition signifies the active research on sustainability-focused initiatives and environmental innovation taking place within this program.
