"This letter of intent unites two world-leading institutions in a mission for research excellence and social impact," says David Bressler, U of A vice-president (innovation and enterprise), who led a recent delegation to Japan to sign the agreement with Tohoku University vice-president Masahiro Yamaguchi.

"By aligning our shared values and visions, this strategic collaboration will accelerate breakthroughs and foster the global talent needed to drive international development," Bressler adds.

The partnership will leverage the universities' mutual expertise in areas such as hydrogen and renewable resources, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, robotics and mechatronics, as well as business management and analytics.

Bressler notes that the agreement also expands opportunities for graduate students and early-career researchers to gain international experience, access to shared doctoral supervision and joint grant funding, and a broader range of potential research projects involving industry.

"Together, we are bridging expertise across Canada and Japan to create a more innovative, sustainable future."
