U of R celebrates four remarkable leaders with honorary degrees at Spring Convocation

June 18, 2026

As graduates prepare to cross the stage at the University of Regina's Spring Convocation ceremonies, four individuals whose lives and careers have helped shape communities, institutions, and opportunities at home and around the world will also be awarded honorary degrees. Honorary degrees are the University's highest distinction, recognizing individuals whose leadership, service, and accomplishments have made a profound and lasting impact.

"Our honorary degree recipients embody the very best of what we hope to inspire in our graduates," says University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor Jeff Keshen. "Through their leadership, vision, and commitment to improving the lives of others, Sol and Elsie Sanderson, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, and Dr. Bob Steadward have each left an indelible mark on Saskatchewan, Canada, and indeed the world. We are proud to recognize their remarkable contributions to the life of our communities."

On Wednesday, June 17, the University will confer Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees upon Mr. Sol and Mrs. Elsie Sanderson. Through decades of work in Indigenous governance, education, and community leadership, they have helped create opportunities for generations of Indigenous peoples and played a vital role in strengthening First Nations institutions and preserving traditional knowledge.

On Thursday, June 18, the University will honour the Honourable Ralph Goodale with an Honorary Doctor of Laws. Goodale's more than 50 years of public service have included roles as a member of parliament, senior federal cabinet minister, and, most recently, High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom. His career has been defined by his steadfast commitment to Saskatchewan and Canada.

On Friday, June 19, the University will recognize Dr. Bob Steadward, a Saskatchewan-born pioneer of the Paralympic movement, with an Honorary Doctor of Laws. Dr. Steadward's vision and leadership have transformed opportunities for people with disabilities around the world. As founding president of the International Paralympic Committee, he helped elevate the Paralympic Games to the global stage and championed the values of accessibility and inclusion.
