In March 2024, Saskatchewan Polytechnic students demonstrated their creativity and problem-solving skills at the institution's first-ever hackathon, Sask Polytech Hack 2024. This exciting event brought together teams from different School of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) programs, including Computer Systems Technology and Interactive Design & Technology (among others), to compete and develop innovative solutions to enhance the Sask Polytech experience for future students.
The hackathon's challenge statement, "How can we make Sask Polytech a better place for future students?" inspired participating teams to present a wide range of creative and practical ideas. Among the proposed solutions were an improved student and campus event calendar, a unified access card and student ID for all campus activities, a student-led community forum, and a dedicated carpool app exclusively for Sask Polytech students. However, the winning idea that stood out was an enhanced booking experience for students with accommodations.
"Sask Polytech Hack 2024 not only fostered innovation and collaboration but also provided a platform for students to connect with industry professionals," says Spencer Nikkel, Learning and Innovation instructor. "Thank you to the judges who provided valuable feedback and insights, further enhancing the learning experience for the competitors."
Continuing the momentum of student achievements, the School of ICT recently hosted a student showcase in April. Over 70 students presented 25 projects they have been working on during their programs. The event showcased the exceptional capstone projects of students from Business Information Systems, Cloud Computing and Blockchain, Computer Automated Systems Technician, Computer Engineering Technology, Computer Systems Technology, Interactive Design and Technology and Graphic Communications programs allowing them to present their work and build confidence in their abilities. Projects ranged from video games to learn about the project management lifecycle, to several artificial intelligence projects including an AI-powered job board and AI-tool to help detect mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's Disease-related dementia. The ICT showcase featured presentations and poster sessions, further strengthening the connection between faculty, students and industry.
"Both of these events are great examples of how the School of ICT provides work-integrated learning opportunities for students," says Shaun Nanan, academic chair, School of ICT. "Work-integrated learning projects give learners the opportunity to integrate their technical skills from their studies into a business project, and that enhances their learning and provides valuable work experience. Congrats to our students from both events for a job well done."
Tanis Wilder adds, "These events bring students together from various programs, fostering collaboration and highlighting the benefits of working together." Wilder is also an academic chair for the school.
The success of Sask Polytech Hack 2024 and the student showcase highlights the dedication and talent of Sask Polytech's ICT students. Their passion for problem-solving and their ability to think outside the box will make them valuable future employees.
