May 2, 2025

Dr. Herman Barkema, DVM, PhD, a distinguished researcher in veterinary medicine and epidemiology, has been recognized with a prestigious award from the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC).

This accolade underscores Dr. Barkema's remarkable contributions to the field and his commitment to advancing both research and policy. Dr. Barkema, a visionary in veterinary research, has integrated his expertise in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and epidemiology to address some of the most pressing health challenges facing society today.

His work is a testament to the university's commitment to the One Health approach, acknowledging the interconnectedness of animal health, human health, and the environment.

"Research is vital, but its true value lies in innovation and policy impact," Dr. Barkema emphasizes. "The nature of my research is transdisciplinary from a One Health approach. Every manuscript that I [co] author and every presentation that I give is the result of teamwork. I see this award as a strong indication that transdisciplinary teamwork is appreciated and that research with a One Health approach is very much needed!"

Establishing UCalgary as international collaboration hub

His career, marked by groundbreaking research on infectious diseases, particularly antimicrobial resistance, has led to significant policy changes within the World Health Organization and governments across the globe, including Canada and Europe.

Throughout his career, Dr. Barkema has secured over $84 million in funding, trained more than 50 graduate students, and published extensively in high-impact journals.

His leadership has been instrumental in establishing the University of Calgary as a hub for international collaboration, fostering initiatives in China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Latin America, and India.

These efforts culminated in the establishment of a World Health Organization center on antimicrobial resistance at UCalgary.

Working with diverse audiences

Dr. Barkema's ability to engage comfortably with diverse audiences, from international conference attendees to local farmers, allows him to identify and tackle key challenges collaboratively.

"He's just as comfortable speaking at an international conference as he is in the barn," says his colleague, Dr. John Gilleard, associate dean and professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM).

His efforts have not only advanced research but also brought tangible benefits to communities worldwide. His work in managing mastitis and Johne's disease in dairy cattle has revolutionized practises globally, illustrating the profound impact of science-based, evidence-driven medicine.

Dr. Barkema's research has led to a decrease in the use of antibiotics in dairy cattle at the end of the lactation. Also, his research in the role of calves in Johne's disease, a prevalent disease in cattle worldwide, has demonstrated that calves play an important role in the transmission of the disease which has led to including young cattle in prevention and control programs.

"Herman's real strength lies in his visionary approach," says Dr. John Kastelic, another fellow professor at UCVM. "He's a giant in the field, bringing together the research community to ensure that research leads to societal impact."

UCalgary's role as a leader in research

Dr. Barkema's natural enthusiasm and leadership continue to inspire, exemplifying the university's Start Something ethos. His work not only advances knowledge but also underscores UCalgary's role as a leader in research and innovation, providing economic value and fostering entrepreneurial thinking that benefits communities locally and globally.
