STTA Students Place #1 World-Wide in Math Competition

Three Grade 2 students from St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School earned top honours in April, placing first globally in an international digital math competition.

The contest, hosted by Caribou Contests, is a worldwide online platform that offers math-based learning tools and competitions for students of all abilities. Designed to support curriculum-aligned learning, Caribou aims to foster a love for mathematics, reduce math anxiety, and promote resilience through problem-solving challenges.

The Caribou Math Contest runs six times a year and is open to students in Grades K-12, grouped into levels K/1, 2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12.

"I like math because it's interesting," said Eddie Morris, one of the contest winners. "I like big equations; it's cool to try to figure out a hard problem." Eddie aspires to become an engineer, a career where his passion for math will no doubt serve him well.

Introducing the contest to her classroom has had a powerful impact, said teacher Alyssa Vecchioni.

"Participating in the Caribou Math Contest has been a valuable addition to our program. It encourages students to strengthen their problem-solving and critical thinking skills while developing a genuine enthusiasm for math," she said. "The contest offers an exciting way for students to challenge themselves beyond the standard curriculum, creating a learning environment that celebrates persistence and growth."

One of Vecchioni's students, Aria Lang, also ranked first in the competition.

"Aria's achievement is a source of inspiration to her classmates and a shining example of what determination and a love of learning can accomplish," Vecchioni said. "Her dedication and passion for mathematics have truly paid off."

Like Eddie, Aria enjoys the challenge that math brings. "I like algebra. I like being challenged," she said.

Brian Daly, Assistant Superintendent of Education, praised both the students and the educators who make these opportunities possible.

"It's wonderful to see students so engaged with meaningful and challenging math experiences at St. Thomas the Apostle and across our school system," he said. "We're grateful to our educators for nurturing that love of learning."

The third top-ranking student, Aiden Chung, is described by teacher Dorota Krygel as a "passionate learner."

"Aiden approaches challenges with focus and determination," she noted. "He often offers thoughtful solutions during discussions and stands out for his ability to make meaningful connections between math concepts and real-life situations."

Aiden added, "I find it fun to do math that's above my grade level. It's a mini challenge."

"Congratulations to Aiden, Aria, and Eddie on their remarkable accomplishments," said Daly.

"It's incredible to see students from our system finish first in a competition of this scale, both nationally and internationally."
