Bishop's University is pleased to announce that Jessica Riddell, Jarislowsky Chair of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence and Full Professor at Bishop's University, has been appointed Vice Chair of the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) - the first Canadian to occupy this function. This appointment marks a significant moment of international recognition for both Professor Riddell and Bishop's University.

Founded in 1915, the AAC&U is a leading international organization representing nearly 1,000 universities and colleges committed to advancing a liberal education that prepares students for lives of purpose, civic responsibility, and global engagement. Through research, advocacy, and convening, the AAC&U shapes key conversations about the future of higher education in North America and beyond.
Professor Riddell is recognized for her leadership in higher education transformation, public humanities, and hope-based institutional design. As the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence, her work has positioned Bishop's University as a national and international convener for conversations about undergraduate teaching excellence, civic imagination, and human flourishing.
Reflecting on her appointment, Professor Riddell said:
"I am deeply honoured to take on this leadership role at a moment of fierce urgency for higher education in Canada, the United States, and around the world. Even in uncertain times, I see real possibility in bringing people together to do the hopeful work our communities need. Through the Hope Circuits project, I've come to value universities and colleges as essential places where we imagine and practice better futures.
It is a privilege to support the American Association of Colleges and Universities, whose integrity and commitment to the public good make a meaningful impact nationally and globally."
Dr. Kerry Hull, Interim Vice President Academic, Bishop's University, remarks:
"Jessica Riddell's appointment as Vice Chair of the American Association of Colleges and Universities is a powerful affirmation of Bishop's University's longstanding commitment to liberal education. This university models how teaching excellence, civic responsibility, and public imagination can be woven together to create meaningful impact across the sector."
Professor Riddell's appointment underscores Bishop's enduring role as a leader in shaping the values and practices of higher education, both in Canada and internationally.
As Vice Chair of the AAC&U, Professor Riddell will work with senior academic leaders across national sectors in post-secondary education at a critical moment for universities and colleges worldwide.
