Five dedicated students from Nepean High School recently returned from the University of Waterloo after representing their school at the prestigious Provincial Envirothon competition. Hosted annually by Forests Canada, the high-stakes event brings together top young minds to test their environmental knowledge, practical field skills, and problem-solving abilities.
Putting knowledge and hands-on skills to the test
The Envirothon is far more than a typical paper exam. Students were challenged across four core environmental disciplines Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, and Forestry alongside this year's special focus area: Non-Point Source Pollution. To succeed, the team tackled formal tests that combined theoretical concepts with hands-on technical skills. Having earned their spot at provincials by qualifying through a regional competition with a matching format, the Nepean team arrived ready to demonstrate their hard work and preparation.
Tackling a complex, tech-free case study
The true highlight of student achievement came during the intensive case study portion of the event, which tested both core subject knowledge and high-pressure problem-solving. Stripped of all digital technology, the Nepean team had just two hours to analyze a multi-faceted environmental scenario, synthesize concepts across all five subject areas, and map out an actionable solution onto hand-drawn posters. The team then presented their proposal to a panel of expert judges in a crisp 10-minute pitch, followed by a rigorous 5-minute Q&A session where they defended their scientific reasoning and strategy.
Learning beyond the competition
Beyond the high-intensity testing, the multi-day event offered rich social and educational experiences. Living in university dormitories gave the students an exciting preview of post-secondary life, while evening activities allowed them to explore creative and cultural practices:
- Indigenous perspectives: Participating in a medicine pouch workshop led by the university's Indigenous Action Coordinator.
- Hands-on sustainability: Crafting eco-friendly beeswax wrappers, custom buttons, and other creative keepsakes.
- Networking: Connecting with industry professionals and bonding with like-minded peers who share a passion for the environment.
Over 120 schools and more than 10,000 students have participated in the Ontario Envirothon since the program launched in 1994.
This year's provincial gathering brought together 485 students from nearly 70 schools across Ontario, highlighting the immense reach and legacy of the program. Nepean High School's team represented their school community with incredible passion, teamwork, and scientific ingenuity.
